Science-towards-technology breakthrough
This project aims to create a bridge between the automotive industry and fibre optic technology. In accordance with the Horizon Europe strategic plan (21-2024) and the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2022, it aims at developing scientific basis to underpin game-changing technological solutions to support the digital and green transition in a global scale.
A key aspect of the project
The science of car body vibration analysis opens a wide range of diagnostic capabilities that will be researched within this project. For the time being, there are no established scientific models or knowledge that allow for vibration based comprehensive car diagnostics. Such a technology could lead to a breakthrough in car maintenance and service business models, and if successful, may allow for predictive maintenance, safety enhancements and a reduction in overall cost and manpower.
Cognitive science
The algorithms we wish to develop will ease the maintenance of the vehicle giving online information and hints to the driver on many possible troubles. Moreover the development of new smart cars, with enhanced connectivity to the network, with a future fully electric and self-driving vehicles, requires the study of local connectivity with enough data bandwidth to control and read multiple devices real time to perform the necessary adaptation to the environment. In particular smart algorithms including sophisticated AI will enhance the possibilities to connect the vehicle to the rest of the world. In principle the car itself is sensing its integrity and communicates the information where needed realtime. The fact that it can also adapt online to the local changing environment adds an unprecedented flexibility that if fully exploited will allow a better performance either on power saving and ageing.

All dissemination, exploitation and communication activities within the CREATION project will result from the comprehensive strategy (with detailed action plan - plan for the dissemination and exploitation of results including communication activities) and aim at raising awareness about the project outcomes towards target groups. The plan will take into account the participants’ strategy and the identification of target groups of audience. Appropriate procedures will also be established to facilitate the dissemination of the project results following the EU/EIC rules and make the public deliverables easily accessible throughout a full lifespan of the project to all interested stakeholders. How we create our future
Long-term vision
Photonic technologies are currently mainly associated with optical fibre technology and its applications, primarily in telecommunications. We are now working on popularising such technologies and science fields as metrology and optical sensories, in particular, fibre optic sensors in everyday use. Of course, optical fibres will continue to play a key role as a medium for optical signal transmission, yet they will be used in a whole new dimension of applications for investigation of signal both stochastic and harmonic properties. The breakthrough would be predictive maintenance, which will allow both users and companies to plan service actions ahead of actual failures.

A small-sized innovation-oriented company, operating in Germany since 2006, with a strong market position and rich track record of delivering projects in the field of advanced building technologies services for international corporations (e.g. Strabag, Züblin) and developing professional activities in complementary business fields (e.g. automotive) with involvement of the R&D department. The R&D Department of SRS consists of an interdisciplinary team of high-class industry specialists and researchers, including Head of the Airworthiness Department at the Air Force Institute of Technology in Warsaw, experienced lead constructor of such companies as BMW and Mercedes and inventor and owner of patents for automotive solutions, as well as IT, electronics, economics and finance sector experts incl. start-up managers. The research team expertise covers diagnosing and monitoring of airspace and composite structures as well as construction challenges in the automotive industry. SRS Korrosionsschutz will be responsible for the development of the user interface, for testing of the project deliverables, and for the project management.

The scientific profile of the Department of Optoelectronics includes photonics as well as optics and optoelectronic sensor techniques. The Department has at its disposal a broad base of photonic research and metrological infrastructure for the implementation of technically advanced measurement challenges in the analysis of electromagnetic radiation across a wide spectral range, in particular, in fibre optic sensor systems and FTTx networks. The Department’s achievements include the development of photonic and optoelectronic sensor structures and systems in spectral fibre optic technologies for measuring physical and chemical quantities, fabrication and testing of functionalised active photonic sensor materials, and signal processing in a variety of transducers and measuring structures. Politechnika Slaska will contribute in research and development of fibre optic sensor networks for bodyshell sensing.

The Siena Group
The Siena group has more than 30 years of experience in high energy experiments around the world, including the following: the CDF experiment at the Tevatron accelerator (Chicago, US), where they developed the first silicon sensors and the DAQ and Trigger systems; the Magic and CTA Gamma Ray telescopes at IAC (Canarias-Spain), again developing the data transmission DAQ and trigger algorithms; the Totem and CMS experiments at CERN, where they developed the detectors, the trigger and the DAQ of different types of particle detectors (Gas Electron multipliers-GEMs and diamond detectors for picosecond timing); space experiments such as AMS and CALET in the International Space Station. The experiments above make extensive use of fibre optics data transmission, both digital and analogue. The excellence of the group is certified with the large H-Index of the researchers (the Group Leader H-Index is 157). Siena University has acquired (since March 2022) the HRS4R (Human Resources Strategy for Researchers) accreditation. The University will be responsible for the design and development of the communication hardware.

The company was established 12 years ago by former CERN scientists and employees. Cledar Sp. z o.o. gained significant experience and knowledge in designing and development of software end-to-end solutions in the data sector. The company specializes in scalable architectures for data processing and advanced analytics. Cledar Sp. z o.o. shows significant expertise in AI and ML, in particular in Deep Neural Networks, classification and regression models, multivariate statistics, algebraic models, signal processing and pattern recognition. The CEO of Cledar SP. z o.o. is a former Deputy Data Analytic Coordinator of the TOTEM experiment, CERN. The CTO had a leading role in the WLCG grid project. The team is composed of individuals showing high scientific and engineering excellence. Among the team members there are 5 PhDs, former CERN leaders, experienced software designers and developers, physicists and mathematicians. Some team members have the H-index of 27. Cledar Sp. z o.o. has hands-on experience of hardware-software integration including communication hardware and sensory networks. The company has completed numerous projects involving the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence models mainly for the US market. Cledar Sp z o.o. will be responsible for developing an AI solution for interpreting data from a sensory fibre network as well for development of in-vehicle information systems and their APIs. The company will as well install the prototype in a production environment.
